I've recently acquired a pre-owned (only two months old) Nokia N95 from an officemate. He sold it to me since he's only using its phone features and just recently bought a myPhone T22 which is a very simple phone who's main feature is letting you use two SIM card on one phone ... at the same time.
It was a bit pricey but I was really interested with the device because of its integrated GPS and internet access and a phone. Of course, I checked out all of the reviews for the phone first and all of the them points to the GPS capability as piece of garbage.
Currently, I actually carry around a Motorolla V3X phone, a Samsung SGH-X520 phone, a Dell Axim X50 pocket pc and an EMTAC Bluetooh GPS reciever. Well, if you think thats a handfull, imagine carrying around the powercords and USB cables for all the devices.
With all the reviews of the GPS capabilites, I realized that the problem with the N95 is with the integrated GPS reciever. So with this in mind, I installed Nokia's Sports Tracker and paired my N95 with the EMTAC Bluetooth GPS and here is the result.
As you can see, integration of the GPS information with Google Earth is jus so fracking cool! Also, you won't believe how easy it was to do this.
So how does it compare an N95 compare with my previous setup? Here's the rundown:
PROS:
- I now only have to lug around 3 smaller devices (N95 + Bluetooth GPS + SGH-X520)
- With the integrated GPS turned off, I get better satellite signal and longer battery life. My GPS tracker is now turned on all of the time.
- The PDA features of the N95 is way better than Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition
- The Internet access features of the N95 is better than Windows Mobile 2003 2nd Edition
- It sync's with my MacOSX. 'Nuff said.
- Sports Tracker integrates nicely with Google Earth. No more jumping through hoops just to map my routes.
- 5 Mega Pixel Camera
CONS:
- Tiny screen (as oppose to the 480x640 resolution of Dell Axim x50)
- Irritatingly small keypad (I have fat fingers)
As a motorcycle rider, I dont really need to know the blow-by-blow GPS information. I don't need to know where all the shops are or where is the nearest gasoline station. I dont need the GPS to tell me where I am ... I LOVE being lost.
What I need my GPS for is for it to tell me where I've been ang be able to map it and print it for me. The N95 with my EMTAC Bluetooth GPS does this for me and the extra features doesn't hurt one bit.
